Operating system
In April 2000 Yamaha released the V1.13 operating system for the RM1x, you may already have the latest OS (see checking your OS) if not you may want to upgrade to the new version. As an RM1x owner you are entitled to FREE updates of the OS, which will be arranged by your dealer. Comments left on the message board said that some dealers are refusing to order the new ROM's unless you can specifically identify the problems in the old OS. I decided to fit the ROM myself and ordered the chip direct from Yamaha, all it took was a five minute phone call and they did not ask if I had any problems with the old OS. To order the chip yourself see the final page of the owner's manual for the phone number of the Yamaha distributor in your country (UK 01908-366700) the part number is XV161GO1. You will however need a credit card as you will be charged £50 which is credited back to you when you return the old ROM.
Fitting your own ROM
The only tools you will need to fit the new ROM are an anti-static wrist band (£5) and a chip extractor (£1), without these you risk damaging the chips in the RM1x with static electricity and bending the old ROM as you lever it out with a screw driver etc. The first thing to do is remove your RM's knob's, which sounds more painful than it actually is, they just pull off. Next remove ALL the screws at the back of the unit, not forgetting the one which holds in the cable tie and taking note of which of the two types go where. Flip your RM over and place it on a surface that won't scratch it and remove ALL the screws on the underside, even the one in the middle. With a bit of manoeuvring you should now be able to remove the under casing of the RM leaving all its guts secured in the top shell of the machine. Looking inside the unit you should be able to see two chips in the middle of the machine that look like the new ROM. If you look very carefully at the printed circuit board at the end of the chips you will see these are labelled IC2 and IC3, the one you need to remove is IC2. Carefully but firmly pull on the chip with your extractor tool and it should come out relatively easily, then without touching the pins of the new chip sit it on top of the holder so that the pins fit neatly into the small holes. Care should be taken to ensure the chip is the right way round, there is a small indent in one end of the chip which should be lined up with the dent in the white line surrounding the chip holder on the circuit board. Give the chip a firm push exerting pressure on the whole of the chip at the same time to ensure all the legs click into place in one go. To finish off fit the base panel, replace all of the screws and stick your knob's back on, provided nothing has gone wrong when you power up your RM in the test mode you should now read MAIN ROM V1.13.
Check your OS
With your RM1x turned off press and hold the PATTERN, PATT CHAIN & UTILITY BUTTONS and turn the power on.You should now be in the RM1x test screen, next to the heading MAIN ROM is the OS version number. The laterst version is V1.13.
What's it all about ?
The only difference in the latest ROM that I am aware of is that a reset command is not sent from the midi out when the stop or rewind buttons are pressed on the RM. This is helpful if you are using external midi gear but can also be avoided by having the voice of the channel the outboard gear is on set to anything except "phrase".
Should I fit my own ?
Fitting the the OS ROM yourself may damage your RM1x if not done correctly, this may not be covered by the units warranty. Only fit the ROM yourself if you have suitable experience and knowledge and are prepared to accept the consequences !
