TIP - READ THE MANUAL Whether you have
owned your RM1x for a week or a year you
will learn something by reading the
manual. For example page 30 lists the
functions that can only be reached by
holding down two or more buttons at a
time. These are not printed on the casing
and not easily found by experimentation,
there's loads of stuff in the manual for
even the more experienced user. |
| Arpeggio's
Remember that the groove submode
and play fx affect arpeggio's as well as
phrases and that the beat stretch knob
adjusts the arpeggio's speed. Set the pad
velocity to random to vary the arpeggio
even more. |
| Midi
delay delay delay Don't overlook
your midi delay submode. If your using
delays in the variation effects the midi
delay will free up the variation effect
for other uses. Also playing with the
parameters can through up some new tunes
from just a few programmed notes. |
| Some
more lead sounds ? When your
looking for a lead synth voice, don't
forget to try the pads in the
"Sypd&Fx" bank with the
attack turned to -64. |
| Saving
sysexc dumps from outboard gear If you use your
RM to sequence an external synth or
module and need to save its settings via
a bulk dump then save it into another
style. Change the style name to the name
of the module so you know what it is.
When you've finished your tune save your
work as an .r1a file ("ALL").
This way the bulk dump will be saved with
your tune without having to incorporate
it into the first section or give it a
section of its own. |
| Backing
up If you want to back up the
pattern your working on but can't be
bothered with floppy disks, copy the
pattern to an unused user pattern. You
can copy it back again if you screw up
the original. |
| Overdub
& advanced parameters Remember that
all alterations to the oscillators,the
effects parameters and the effects
themselves can be recorded in overdub
record mode. |
| Keyboard
pitchbend and transpose When playing a note on the RM's
keyboard hit the "oct down" or
"oct up" buttons to the left of
the keyboard. The "oct down"
transposes the note down in real time and
backup when you let go, while the
"oct up" key pitchbends the
note upwards while held. Handy if you
don't have an external keyboard with a
pitchbend wheel. |
| Different
variation effects in the same style
Many
people complain about only being able to
have one variation effect in a style.
This is not the case, it is possible to
have two variation effects in the same
style and section, however they can not
be used simultaneously they must be used
in turn. This demo shows you what
I mean, switching between sections A and
B will change the variation from
"delay" to "auto
wah". This was done by using the
edit function to insert the appropriate sys exc command for the
required variation effect at the start of
the phrase. The variation effect level
can also be changed using a controller 94
"Var". Remember if you try to
play two phrases with variation effect
changes at the same time the one in the
higher track number will have priority. |
| Beefing
up the drums There is a lot
of discussion on the message board about
getting the best kick drum out of the
RM1x. everybody has different ideas but
until you find the sound you like this
may be of some help. Start with a good
kick drum and try layering another kick
drum or bass sound behind it on another
track. The Sine or flat bass is good,
this allows you to increase the bottom
end and gives you control over the
release time of your drum sound (voice
edit-release). You can add some low boost
(set up) if you want but this may
interfere with your bass line depending
on the pitch, or you could use the
variation effects 2 or 3 band eq to add
some bottom end just to your drum track. |
